WaterSaver is brought to you by Nelson Angels.  WaterSaver is the brainchild of electrician Jon Taylor who, while working in Raglan, encountered several instances where water tank owners were losing their valuable water as a result of accidents and unanticipated events e.g. taps left on, burst pipes. During such events, the pressure pump would run unchecked, often until the water tank was emptied.

Business Summary

We design, manufacturer and sell the WaterSaver product. We recently completed our first production run and aattended Fieldays at Mystery creek. We are looking for investment to recruit a CEO well versed is scaling a start up business, negotiating distribution sgreeements with major rural outlets and selling into overseas markets.

Who we are

WaterSaver is the brainchild of electrician Jon Taylor who, while working in Raglan, encountered several instances where water tank owners were losing their valuable water as a result of accidents and unanticipated events e.g. taps left on, burst pipes. During such events, the pressure pump would run unchecked, often until the water tank was emptied.

Jon realised the problem was one of controlling the pressure pump, and set about designing an affordable off-the-shelf solution that would allow the pressure pump to work unimpeded as it was designed to - starting and stopping in response to water demand - but intervene and stop the pump, by cutting power to the pump, when it reached a set maximum uninterrupted time limit.

The result was a product Jon called Jet Stop, now known as WaterSaver. WaterSaver prevents the loss of valuable tank water and potential damage to property by monitoring the electrical current to the pump and cutting the power when the pump has run for a maximum uninterrupted period of 30 minutes.

Customer Problem

Independent research revealed 45% of water tank owners have experienced loss of tank water and/or damage to their own or neighbouring property arising from an accidental or unanticipated event that resulted in the pressure pump continuing to pump water unabated until the water tank emptied.

Unlike standard low cost off-the-shelf timers, WaterSaver is a specialised product that permits a pump to operate continuously - turning off and on as necessary - and only cuts power to the pump in the event it runs for a maximum uninterrupted time, set at 30 minutes. It is especially important for residences and businesses that do not have access to mains/town supply water.

Product/Services

WaterSaver is an electronics device that automatically cuts power to a pressure pump when it has run for a maximum uninterrupted time, set at 30 minutes. WaterSaver is to tank water owners what a spare tyre is to car owners. WaterSaver mitigates the risk of water loss and provides the owner with peace of mind. With the purchase price being spread over many years it is a very affordable solution.

Target Market

There are 2.2 million water tanks in NZ and Australia alone, and many times that in Latin America and Asia, where owners are solely reliant on stored water for survival. We are confident with funding for marketing – raising awareness in what is a new product is our greatest challenge – we can capture a significant share of the market of pump owners and prevent the unnecessary loss of valuable tank and stored water. We have been very conservative in our finanicial forecasts which have us capturing 1.6% market share in Australasia over the next 4 years.

Customers

Any resident or business that does not have access to mains water supply and/or is reliant on tank water and a pressure pump to move such. In Australasia there are over 2.2 million water tank owners and this is predicted to increase significantly with increased fears over water supply and quality.

Sales/Marketing Strategy

We will be marketing via a combination of traditional media e.g. print media, magazines, radio and television and digital media e.g. facebook, LinkedIn, online publications. Our target customers are on average conservative so an element of face to face contact will be necessary for spreading the word and therefore we will also have contracted sales reps.

Business Model

We will principally sell via major distributors but will also have trade suppliers in remote regions. We are presently selling the product online to raise awareness but whether we can continnue to do this will depend on the agreements we sign with distributors.

Competitors

We have one competitor, Grundfos, the largest pump manufacturer in the world. Their product (PM2) works differently to WaterSaver in that it monitors water flow (vs electrical current that waterSaver monitors), costs more and has an additional hidden cost of installation and setting by a professional. WaterSaver is a plug in device that is easily installed without the need to set dip switches. WaterSaver can also be unplugged with ease, temporarily re-moved or shared/moved to another pump.

Competitive Advantage/IP

See above, WaterSaver’s biggest advantage is its simplicity and ease of use. Using electrical current for monitoring, it is easily installed, turned off or moved if necessary. It is a plug in device that does not require a tradesperson or user manual for installation.
